Analytic Method -Problem Statement -Description -Theory -Simplifying Assumptions -Problem Solution -Accuracy Verification
Problem Statement- Identify the problem and restate in your own words. Description- Diagram or Sketch the problem while listing all information known and what needs to be found. Theory-Identify all of the mathematical theories and/or equations needed to solve the problem. Simplifying Assumptions- Used to solve problems in a timely and cost-effective manner, use estimation. Estimation/Approximation- Provide answers to problems quickly and can verify complicated analyses. Conservative Assumptions- Introducing errors "on the safe side".
Public Safety is most important in the engineering profession. Problem Solutions- Perform Calculations there is always a single, correct answer. Accuracy Verification- Making sure of standards and that the correct answer is obtained. -Estimate the answer. -Compare with similar solutions. -Compare to previous work. -Compare to published literature on similar problems. -Compare to your own experience. -Repeat the calculation. Scientific Method -Define the method -Gather the facts -Develop a hypothesis -Perform a test -Evaluate the results
Creative Problem Solving Dividing the process into steps lets you break a large, complex problem into simpler problem to apply specific skills in order to solve. Creative Problem Solving -What is wrong? -What do we know? -What is the real problem? -What is the best solution? -How do we implement the solution?
