During the beginning, it was mostly trench warfare, you know, flamethrowers, grenades, mortars, etc. A few tanks were used, but not many because they were unrefined and hard to control, so they were rarely worth the time. Then there were the supply drop planes, of which were key to any battle, and once this was realized, both sides would should down enemy aircraft's. The self-repeating rifle was introduced, which was rather popular.

The most significant effects of WWI would probably be the Alliances made, which would be once more used in the following WWII, but by then the advancements in technology would be way more destructive, as you can tell from Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Another would be the Peace treaty, formally known as "the Treaty of Versailles" which ended the war. But to me, the most significant would be it gave us a reason to advance our technology. Without it, we most likely would not be where we are today.
