In your own words, what is the difference between an analysis, a critique, and a review?
@Shadow this isn't for an assignment or anything I was just curious
Not looking up any definitions because I’m curious as well as to how I’ll interpret this. Going to answer it when I can get on a computer though.
Mobile is iffy
Review, - Brief summary of a written piece Analysis - A break down of a piece, i.e. Rhetorical Analysis Critique - Feedback and rating of a piece
@Marziman is my TL;DR
Whilst all three of these words are arguably synonyms, I would say that they each have certain connotations as a result of how society uses them. You could say this gives them differing meanings. The starting point for each of these words (in order to substantiate calling them synonymous) would be that they each relate to dealing with an entity or article and discerning meaning from it. Analysis - Due to its use in the academic realm, I would say it has an objective connotation. It would deal with facts, and is more thorough than the other two. I would relate it to an algorithmic process that’s methodic in nature (similar to algorithmic problem solving in psychology). This is since if someone were to ask me to analyze something, I would break it down into pieces then ascertain the objective truth, putting it ahead of any subjectives thoughts. Critique - I have seen this word used in the academic realm, yet it’s also related to the word ‘critic.’ This is evocative of food and movie critics which arguably must be subjective in their line of work. Both jobs are tasked with seeking out imperfections, then providing criticism of it. Getting back to the original word, I would say that a critique involves the observation of an entity/article and then providing possible alterations to it, with the intention of bettering it. Review - Out of all these words, I would say this one is of the least consequence. Review is a word that you would likely come across more often in your lifetime, used in a variety of circumstances. Due to this, I would say it’s connotation is rather neutral. It could be as simple as giving your thoughts on a body of information, or comprehensively scrutinizing it. It’s what you make of it in the given circumstances. It’s very name, ‘review’ denotes this. A view is a perspective, this body of information is a given perspective. You are essentially just giving something a new perspective, which can be taken as truthful or false — subjective or objective. Was tempted to look up these words for further thought, but I wanted to abide by the limitations I gave myself. Was fun thinking about how I use these words, and others, and how that might make these synonymous words differ.
