The US could not sustain the expense of another long war. It was thought that the atomic bombs would end the war more quickly, saving lives.

D. Believe it or not, the original plan was going to be invading Japan and destroying the war machine. However, it was estimated that before we would complete the objective, our loses were going to be very high, so it was easier for us to just drop the atomic bomb. Did you know that Nagaski was a secondary target.
