In the context of science, I'd say that inferences we can prove wrong are especially useful, since by eliminating falsehoods we get closer to the truth. In the context of English, which I see this question is posted in, I would say it depends. Maybe an inference can still provide a helpful perspective form which to view a text, even if it is not always supported by the text itself? What's the context of the question, by the way? That might help us to think of the answer.
