I think there are a lot of ways you could describe the Corporal's experience. Imagine waking up on a day like any other, only for everything to be thrown into chaos by an unforeseen explosion. Throughout the attack, the Corporal watched his ship burn down, saw several of his fellow men wounded and killed, and even came close to losing his own life. The experience would be shocking, to say the least. Tragic, draining, chaotic, are some examples of other words you might use. I'm sure you can think of some more as well.
