question about albert einstein

rootbeer003:

What country was Albert Einstein born in? Why did he flee?

rootbeer003:

It says to look over this part in my textbook about "Einsteins appeal to FDR"

rootbeer003:

i can seem to find anything about that question

rootbeer003:

cant*

SmokeyBrown:

I know Einstein was born in Germany. I think he fled to the United States for fear of being persecuted by the Nazis, as he was born to a Jewish family.

rootbeer003:

oh i did see something about Germany

rootbeer003:

Why did Einstein and other physicists worry that the Germans had Einstein’s equation E=mc2?

rootbeer003:

They worried that they would create an atomic bomb?

rootbeer003:

"massively destructive weapon"

SmokeyBrown:

I think that's it, yes.

rootbeer003:

Although Einstein urged FDR to experiment and develop a “weapon” that ultimately lead to the Manhattan Project and the atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima & Nagasaki; why did Einstein not actually take part in the experimental work?

SmokeyBrown:

I think it had to do with Einstein's philosophy of pacifism. As much as possible, he wished to distance himself from the bomb's creation.

rootbeer003:

interesting

rootbeer003:

In his letter to FDR, Einstein says that it is his duty to bring to FDR’s “attention the following facts and recommendations”. What facts and recommendations does Einstein bring to FDR’s attention?

rootbeer003:

last one lol

rootbeer003:

i can try quoting some stuff he said in the FDR

SmokeyBrown:

Oh, I found a copy of the letter. Just reading through that now.

rootbeer003:

ok

SmokeyBrown:

Sorry, got a little side-tracked.

rootbeer003:

thats ok

SmokeyBrown:

So I think the 'facts and recommendations' deal with the possibility of building an atomic bomb and the necessity of acquiring lots of uranium to do so. As Einstein points out, America's supply of uranium would not be enough for the task.

rootbeer003:

oh ok i see

rootbeer003:

im done with history =) Thanks for helping me
