The following transcript comes from the monumental 2008 case of Heller vs. District of Columbia. The result of this Supreme Court case determined the Second Amendment protects the right of an individual to keep and bear arms. Read the statement and then answer the question that follows: Okay. I'd like to respond—certainly, Justice Scalia. I'd like to respond to the point about the—the District of Columbia's position over the years with respect to the functional firearms ban. The Petitioners have had two opportunities to urge courts to adopt this so-called self-defense exception which they construed in the amendment. The first opportunity came in 1978 in McIntosh versus Washington, where the petitioners urged the Court of Appeals of the District of Columbia to uphold the law because it was irrational in their view to prohibit self-defense in the home with firearms. They deemed it to be too dangerous, and this was a legitimate policy choice of the City Council, and they actually prevailed in that view. The second opportunity that the Petitioners had to urge this sort of self-defense construction was actually in this case in the district court. In one paragraph of five to eight sentences, evaluate whether the statement is effective in terms of ethos. Use evidence from the statement to support your answer. Use proper spelling and grammar.

UsArmy3947:

The directions are very confusing :/

Marziman:

Your answer, upon reading it, appears to be completely incorrect. It's asking you if the author is making an ethos appeal/whether or not it is effective. Instead of evaluating any supposed ethos appeal you've written some analysis or something of the article

UsArmy3947:

So... In other words i'm suppose to be writing if the article given is effective towards the audience or not, correct?

Shadow:

Do you understand what ethos is?

UsArmy3947:

Ethos I believe is Credibility?

Marziman:

No. Ethos is a logical appeal based upon a pedigree/qualifications and is presented in a way where you sound unbiased/objective.

UsArmy3947:

Ah.... and the article is biased right?

Marziman:

For instance, "As the head of the FDA I can confirm that the purdue chicken brand has performed outside of legal boundaries to a degree that is punishable by both the courts and the people" This is an Ethos appeal. I mention my pedigree and make an objective statement about Purdue brand Chicken.

UsArmy3947:

So... I must write how the article is using Ethos or isn't using Ethos?

UsArmy3947:

I believe it is biased

Marziman:

You must write how effectively it utilizes ethos.

Bob:

1. Justice Scalia is dead 2. Aren't you supposed to address him as your honor?

UsArmy3947:

Hmm @Marziman but can you narrow down for me what is Ethos

Marziman:

This was in 2008 bob...

Shadow:

^ and Justice is fine

Marziman:

As previously stated "Ethos is a logical appeal based upon a pedigree/qualifications and is presented in a way where you sound unbiased/objective."

Shadow:

It’s like saying Senator or Congressman.

Bob:

yeah but i thought it was a current response lmao

UsArmy3947:

So... Ethos is to determine if an article is unbiased and a credible source?

Shadow:

It is. It just doesn’t matter if the Justice is dead or not. Army, does the speaker announce any credibility?

Marziman:

No no no. Ethos is just an appeal, it's a form of literary PERSUASION.

UsArmy3947:

>.< so hard...

Marziman:

Identify whether or not the speaker mentions their pedigree, achievements, position etc. Then identify whether or not, said, speaker is using specific objective language.

Shadow:

It’s as simple as someone trying to sell you a health drink and they start by saying that they are a nutritionist, then list a bunch of health benefits from drinking the juice.

UsArmy3947:

Ok ok... so what am I supposed to write? (not asking for answers) but Exactly what should I strive to write about?

UsArmy3947:

Like if the author is incorrect or if ethos is being used in the article?

Marziman:

"evaluate whether the statement is effective in terms of ethos"

UsArmy3947:

Effective to the audience?

Marziman:

Is he getting his point across USING ethos

UsArmy3947:

Ah... I see :)

Marziman:

I guess to a degree? They just want to know is he getting his point across using the ethos persuasion technique.

UsArmy3947:

Is the author's statement effective towards the audience correct?

UsArmy3947:

Got it :D

UsArmy3947:

Thanks guys <3

Marziman:

Yw.

UsArmy3947:

Lol good thing I didn't submit that last response XD It's part of my final exam

UsArmy3947:

And I didn't understand anything... only that little response is worth 45% of my grade XD

Marziman:

http://pathosethoslogos.com/

Marziman:

Read through the Ethos description and then scroll towards the bottom, you'll see an example of ethos. It's a speech Barack Obama delivered and it is a fantastic example of what Ethos is. Or you can just use my example "As the head of the FDA I can confirm that the purdue chicken brand has performed outside of legal boundaries to a degree that is punishable by both the courts and the people" This is an Ethos appeal. I mention my pedigree and make an objective statement about Purdue brand Chicken."

UsArmy3947:

Thank you so much Marzi <3 Great help

Marziman:

You're welcome.

UsArmy3947:

@Marziman do you think the article is uses Ethos effectively?

Marziman:

Let me double check .

UsArmy3947:

No prob bro

Marziman:

I mean to a degree it does. The speaker sounds very self-righteous and disrespectful, there's some bias leaking in at the edges. It's somewhat ethos but not really.

UsArmy3947:

That's the confusing part... it's like going everywhere

Marziman:

For a simple answer, no it's not ethos. There is no mention of the authors pedigree and they're biased sounding.
