Is literature an effective form of social commentary?
Sure, it represents the mores of the people at the time. We can go back and read literature, for example, from the 1960s' and get an understanding of what people were doing, and thinking at that time. We can read today's literature and decipher what we are all about. Of course we must read about what people from different socioeconomic, political, educational, and financial business backgrounds. In addition we must know what genders are talking about, as well as different ethnic groups in order to get a well rounded picture of what's going on in our society. Some newspapers, t.v. channels, and radio stations cater to a specific type of people. In order to be prepared to have an interesting conversation, and for us to discern our own thoughts, one must read not only what we agree with, but read what we disagree with, or what we don't understand.

Does it affect people and instigate awareness and change? Definitively! Yes!
It's impossible to know what's going on at all times. I have read many articles and essays that have spung me into action. Whe I read about injustices committed against the innocent, it affects me, and I want to do something about. I have signed petitions, and written letters on behalf of a cause, and also participated in some marches in my time. It's always rewarding, if not always successful. Yes literature is an effective form of social commentary. People can be informed and gain knowledge about certain issues and topics through literature.

Yes because we cannot know everything that goes on. It can help me and others know what happened at the time and to see what i can do at the current time that may make a change.
