The Internal Organs Deeper inside the body, past the vagina, is the uterus. The uterus is also called the womb. It is a muscular, fist-sized organ that expands and holds a growing fetus (the unborn baby) during pregnancy. The neck of the uterus is called the cervix, which has a small opening in the middle. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus, and has to be fully open to let a baby out during childbirth. The cervix also allows menstrual fluid to leave the uterus. Also, during sexual intercourse, the cervix allows sperm—the male reproductive cells—to enter the uterus and fallopian tubes. On either side of the uterus are the fallopian tubes and ovaries. The ovaries are almond-shaped organs that contain immature ova, or eggs. The ovaries also release estrogen and progesterone, two female hormones that control menstruation, ovulation (which occurs when an ovum—an egg—is released from the ovary ), and other functions of a woman’s body. The fallopian tubes are thin tubes. The inside of each tube is about the width or diameter of a strand of spaghetti, and each month an egg travels from the ovary down one of the tubes toward the uterus.
