Poetry Guide/Lesson

justasoftie:

Welcome to this tutorial\lesson thingy. So first I am going to start with a few things, and then I will get into everything else. 1. No poetry examples are mine unless stated. If they do not belong to me, I will put a link to the original, and where you can find the author. 2. Be nice. I spend a lot of time on tutorials and I hate it when people leave useless comments or spam. 3. Wait to say anything at the end, when I am done adding the lesson fragments.

What this lesson will cover: Part One: What is poetry? Part Two: Types of poetry (with examples) Part Three: Writing resources Part Four: End note

justasoftie:

Part One: Now, most people have read at least one example of poetry in their life. Technically, in order to not know what poetry is, you'd have to be living under a rock with no radio or social media! This is because songs are simply a type of poetry. So, poetry is a genre of literature. It's a work of writing that will paint a picture in your head and stimulate emotions and the mind to think and paint a picture. Poetry usually rhyme, but it doesn't have to rhyme, there's no rule against it. At times you have to have certain amounts of syllables and such. Poetry is used to capture the aesthetic qualities or parts of the world that no one really notices until they stop and think. Many people can describe poetry in many different ways, making it hard to find a definition that goes write with everyone (Do you see what I did there? We're doing writing and, uh I'll leave now). Poetry can tell asp story, describe feelings, or go through memories. It's just different for everyone, since there are so many types, and so many rules behind them. Poetry could also help express religious beliefs and outlooks on how the world is. You may notice when you hear poetry, you hear a beat. This beat is a rhythm and it is formed when you have the certain words rhyming in a certain order.

Well, now that we are through that, we are going to get down to business and name some types of poetry. Haiku: A haiku is a short Japanese poem, and is most likely about nature or guessing something in nature. There are three lines, they don't have to rhyme, but the line pattern in 5-7-5. This means in each line there has to be a certain amount of syllables. These poems have been around for a while, making them ancient. Example: teaching-haiku-poem-1-728.jpg (Image or poem is not mine and the author of the poem can not be determined) Couplet: This one of my favorite formats for poems, and I use it a lot. A couple is a pair of verse that rhyme and can be by themselves, or in a poem of the same format. Example: Crunchy leaves under my feet, Spider webs on a public bench seat. Trees almost bare, No more leaves to spare. Scarves and jackets hanging everywhere, And leaves are blowing through the air. Pumpkin pie and coffee, And a hint of toffee. Wet leaves in the raining days, All around the corn maze. Cinnamon and apples, The scents all going through the air as the bells ring on the chapels. Children playing in the leaves, And the mother heavy breathes. Coffee brews at the nearby cafe, And there meows the local stray. And my pen scratches the paper, As there goes another skater. (My poem. This is an example of it as a whole) Cinquain: A cinquain is one of the most simple poems to write. It does not have to rhyme and you have follow a simple rule or format. Line One: The title of the poem, must be one word. Line Two: Two adjectives that describe the title Line Three: Three -ing words that describe what the word does Line Four: Four words that express your feelings about the title Line Five: Another name for the title Example: Gossip Hurtful Ignorant Damaging, Long-lasting, Defeating Sad, Despondent, Depressed, Unhappy Gossip Information on the author: https://www.poetrysoup.com/poems_poets/poems_by_poet.aspx?ID=97731 Acrostic Poem: An acrostic poem is a non rhyming poem which has how many ever lines in it as the title has. Each line most start with a word that starts with the same letter that starts the line. That may sound a bit confusing, but I believe you will understand once you read the example. Example: maxresdefault.jpg

Part Three: Poetry Resources: Now I am going to be making a list of many poetry resources that I have found over they years of me writing poetry. These can be really helpful, and if you are a poet I suggest using them. 1. https://www.rhymezone.com Rhyme Zone is a site that can find you words that rhyme with the word you enter. I know that sounds rather basic but it can also finf you poems or songs that have that word in them, near rhymes, phrase rhymes, synonyms, phrases, example sentences, definitions, and much more. It's like everything wrapped into one great site. 2. http://www.wordcalc.com This site will count the syllables in your paragraph. This is useful if you are writing a haiku or other syllables limit poems. It can also count how many words are in the poem or paragraph. It can also analyze paragraphs and sentences, if you check that option. 3. http://www.acrosticpoem.org This isn't exactly something that is a resource, but it literally generates an acrostic poem for your name! You simply select your name and your gender and boom! Sorry non binary peeps but they don't have a choice for you. Mine is: E is for Enchanting, most alluring V is for Versed, so knowledgeable A is for Articulate, the gift of expression N is for Nurturing, you bring out the good in people 4. http://www.namepoem.org This is another acrostic poem generator but it gives you an option to make it silly or motivational. I did both and I'll share them. Motivational: E is for Essential, a friend of great importance V is for Visionary, a dreamer A is for Athletic, it is breathtaking to watch you play N is for Nutty, full of wackiness Silly: Energetically obliged Visited bears dimly Absentmindedly zigzagged Neatly scowled
