Remember the free-verse poem, "Lost Youth," by Annis Mather? It describes one person's idea about being old. How common is this poem's idea about being old? How old is "old"? You can find answers to these questions and others by interviewing someone you know who is over fifty. Questioning The key to writing a good narrative is having material to work with. The key to obtaining that material is asking good questions. In an interview you want to ask questions that are open ended and cannot be answered with a simple yes or no. Sample questions: What was the happiest time in your life? What are the most significant ways in which the world has changed since you were my age? What things have changed very little or not at all since you were in school? What is the most significant world or national event that you have observed? What is the most important lesson you have learned in your life and want to pass along? Please share a favorite story or event in your life. Do not limit yourself to these questions. Try to find out how he or she feels about no longer being "young." Observe his or her attitude toward life. Why can a person seem young at over fifty years old? Recording When recording the answers, be sure to remember the responses accurately. You may want to ask the person if you can make an audio or video recording of the interview. It is important to write down the individual's language and expressions accurately. In your report, summarize what you learned from this person about being "young" and growing "old." Your report should be at least 150 words long.
