Well, this is known as a parenthetical citation. Essentially, when writing a paper, and you post a piece of information, either paraphrased, quoted, or summarized, you provide a citation of where you got the information. When writing a paper, you always give credit to the people who created the content/did the research which you used to help write your essay. This credit goes in your work cited page. But when the reader is going through your essay, they may want to find where exactly in the work cited page this website/book is. The parenthetical citation helps with that, providing an author named, or article title.
