I need help explaining tone, figurative language, structure, Romanticism, Naturalism. and explaining how both authors show their love for nature using two of these items.

Elsa213:

Figurative language is something that shouldn't be taken literally. e.e The author uses tone to show the mood of the character.

AnimeGhoul8863:

Original Thesis: Both John and William admire the beauty of nature and explains how nature brings them such joy and happiness They write in different ways but both admire nature the same way and use the same tones during both pieces. Revised thesis: Both authors Show there love of nature by using tone and figurative language through out there pieces.

II. Topic Sentence: John Muir’s essay described that the Calypso borealis flower seemed spiritual and had a power over the human heart. He uses metaphor's and both positive and negative tones. A. Example, Reason, Detail, or Fact from the text: “It seemed the most spiritual of all the flower people I had ever met. I sat down beside it and fairly cried for joy.” B. Explanation: John explained that when he saw this flower he cried tears of joy because the flower just by its self made him feel like his problems were taken away. A simple look at a flower can do such a thing to a person. C. Example, Reason, Detail, or Fact from the text: “It seems wonderful that so frail and lovely a plant has such power over human hearts.” D. Explanation: John felt that this flower even though its so "frail and lovely" it has a power to the human and sparks joy in your heart and makes you feel happy.

AnimeGhoul8863:

^this focuses on john muir the next one focuses on william ill post it just one second and e.e i know i wasnt thinking i always re do that at the end

Elsa213:

Where is the metaphor in the quote?

AnimeGhoul8863:

he uses metaphors like "the flower is spiritual" its a figure of speech so i suggested it was a metaphor

Elsa213:

Wouldn't that be personification? e.e

AnimeGhoul8863:

im mean if u think it is then sure im really not good at this stuff

Elsa213:

A metaphor is like a simile but does not allow the words `like` or `as`. Example: Emily is a cheetah when it comes to running. Simile, however, requires the words `like` or `as`. Example: Emily is like a cheetah when it comes to running.

Elsa213:

Personification, on the other hand, is giving a living action to something nonliving. Example: The tree branch knocked on my window.

AnimeGhoul8863:

then would it be hyperbole because he said the flower is spiritual but he doesnt mean it literally

Elsa213:

III. Topic Sentence: William Wordsworth’s poem explains how When looking at the flowers of nature you cant be anything but happy He uses personification and positive tone through out his piece. A. Example, Reason, Detail, or Fact from the text: “When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.” B. Explanation: William talks about seeing a crowd of daffodils and that the breeze makes them look like there dancing This is a personification because he is explaining that the flowers are dancing because he is comparing them to a human action. C. Example, Reason, Detail, or Fact from the text: “The waves beside them danced; but they Out-did the sparkling waves in glee: A poet could not but be gay, In such a jocund company” D. Explanation: William talks about how the waves of the breeze besides the flowers makes them dance and you could not but be Gay (happy) He uses a positive tone and mood in this because he is explaining how looking at these dancing flowers make him happy.

AnimeGhoul8863:

@Elsa213

AnimeGhoul8863:

. Explanation: William talks about how the waves of the breeze besides the flowers makes them dance and you could not but be Gay (happy) He uses a positive tone and hyperbole in this because he is explaining how looking at these dancing flowers make him happy and he talks about them dancing but doesnt really mean that.
