How To Name An OC
Table Of Contents: 1. Beginning message 2. Part One 3. Part Two 4. Part Three 5. Part Four 6. Part Five
Hello there! So, if you know about the tutorials I post, you should know that most of the time they are writing related, because I’m about brain dead for everything else. So take off your shoes, coat, socks, and glasses. Wait. Put your glasses back on so you can see. You have to read somehow.
Part One: Attitudes. So one of my main pet peeves is when the character’s name does not match its character. The author cannot use the excuse, “Oh they were born that way.” You named them. You made them with your pen and paper in your dark little office. You wouldn’t name a shy and quiet character Lolita, you would name a bright and vamp like girl Lolita, according to the meaning of the name Lolita. You also would not want to name your villain a soft name like Lachlan or similar. That in my opinion sounds like a soft name, and I would not be able to take the villain seriously. Or Sebastian. Sebastian was the main villain in the book series, The Mortal Instruments and I think it would just clash too much with that.
Part Two: Mary Sues There are some names out there which are absolutely overused by fangirls and twelve year olds with their edgy ocs. There are many overused names like, Sky, Rainbow something, Chaos, Sparkles, Kitty, Shadow, Night, or Owl. There are many for males as well and trust me, as you go to the male side of OCs, it gets way worse. To keep your OC from not having a Mary Sue or Gary Stu name, I suggest keeping it rare, but not too rare because people have to be able to pronounce their name and know what it means.
Part Four: Shy Girl Names: Ballari: Walking softly or quietly; One who walks gently Dianthe: A flower; Gentle and introspective Diara: A gift from the heavens; they are quiet but will take what they want Edith: A quiet soul; Old soul; Super kind Galina: The spirit of the ocean Galene: A quiet and relaxing person. Elodie: A marshy white flower blossom Modesta: Shy and very modest Tiombe: Shy Shy Boy Names: Golan: A man or boy with an inner need for quiet and peacefulness Nyein: Quiet, Calmness Placido: A man who is calm and kind hearted Sabro: A very patient man Susu: A very quiet sound Hyper Girl Names: (No meanings, these just sound hyper to me. I’m getting a bit tired of typing all of these out) Mandy Pammy Rochelle Sheila Sherin Suzy Tara Tonie Tyna Vicki Vida Yvette Zorina Hyper Boy Names: Lance Levi Mikey Rambabu Rocky Rosheon Barnaby Alex
Part Five: Older Sounding Male Names: Charles Charlie Ben Benjamin Frank Edward Homer Oscar (I had a turtle named Oscar) Vincent (This is my fave) Raymond Rickie Randy Rick Ronnie Victor Tony Walter Older Sounding Female Names: Viola Vera Honey Lola Lolita Alma Agnes Clancy Clary Bea Beatrice Amelia Amela Maxine Irene
