so when people dismiss scientific theories as "just theories" they are using the definition of "theory" used by laymen/ordinary people not scientists any ideas what might be a better answer?

C

close but I think there's a better description of what the big bang actually was

A

D

Vocaloid:

@BRAINIAC if it's alright would you mind weighing in on this one? (this last one about theories)

Vocaloid:

like, I feel like all of them are true to a degree, but the weaker answers that stand out to be are B and D :S

BRAINIAC:

Option D is correct It can be used to make predictions - Hypothesis sorry 4 the late reply, I was afk

Vocaloid:

alright, thank you ~

where is "overusing the laugh track"? but in all seriousness I don't know this one, @BRAINIAC would you mind weighing in again? :S

zarkam21:

idk im stuck between A and D

Shadow:

Leaning towards D, but that's just me. One of the greatest faults with the Big Bang Theory is that it violates the first law of thermodynamics. The Big Bang Theory basically says there was nothing, then there was something. Doesn't make any sense. So what caused it?

Vocaloid:

yeah that's what I was thinking too, according to my understanding the big bang theory starts with the assumption that the big bang happened and tries to explain physical phenomena under that reasoning (I could be wrong tho :S)

zarkam21:

Yeah that is true, main thing that is a shortcoming or a fault is like what caused it

zarkam21:

I think I will go with D

@BRAINIAC @Shadow sorry to bother you again but do you know anything about this last question? whether the most "accepted" model of the universe is flat/closed/open? I've heard all of them but idk which one is the most accepted

zarkam21:

@Shadow

Vocaloid:

well I posted it in the mod team, so far we have one vote towards a closed universe that doesn't contract :S

zarkam21:

oh okay :/

Vocaloid:

personally I've always been taught that the universe is infinitely expanding :S

zarkam21:

Thats what I mean I just don tknow

zarkam21:

I think IM gonna put D?

Vocaloid:

it can't be D, that's contradictory, it's gotta be B or C, I've asked around and they say B is the safer, more traditional answer since A and C are newer explanations

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/aqa_pre_2011/radiation/originsrev2.shtml from what I understand its cosmic radiation + red shift not the conversion of matter into energy
