The English needed a faster and more efficient route to trade their goods to Asian countries.  It was believed that the Northwest passage could provide that access.  In the late 1500s English explorers began the search. However, their search proved futile.  This explorer was later hired by the Dutch to locate the northwest passage. That search proved futile . It was not until mid 1800s the Northwest passage was discovered by another English explorer.
