Louise completed the work shown below. (5x3 + 3)2 = (5x3)2 + (3)2 = 25x6 + 9 Determine if Louise’s answer is correct. Explain.

Shadow:

@ericagaines12

Shadow:

\[(5x^3 + 3)^2 = (5x^3)^2 + (3)^2 = 25x^6 + 9\] Is this what it looks like?

ericagaines12:

yes

Mercury:

note: in general, (A+B)^2 is not equal to A^2 + B^2 with that being said do you think Louse is right or not?

ericagaines12:

no

Mercury:

well done, so you would just say Louse is not correct and then explain why

Mercury:

to be a bit more specific, (A+B)^2 under order of operations, the exponent must be evaluated first so (A+B)^2 = (A+B)(A+B) = A^2 + 2AB + B^2 not just A^2 + B^2

ericagaines12:

thank youuuuu !

ericagaines12:

what about this one ?? Charlie used a regression calculator to generate the equation f(x) = –0.15x + 20.1 for the ordered pairs (2, 15), (4, 21), (6, 26), (8, 20), and (10, 14). Is a linear representation the best way to represent the data? If it is, explain why. If not, explain why and suggest a better alternative.
