2. Define theme in a complete sentence. Then, provide an example of a theme for the following fable: A shepherd-boy, who watched a flock of sheep near a village, brought out the villagers three or four times by crying out, "Wolf! Wolf!" and when his neighbors came to help him, laughed at them for their pains. The Wolf, however, did truly come at last. The Shepherd-boy, now really alarmed, shouted in an agony of terror: "Pray, do come and help me; the Wolf is killing the sheep"; but no one paid any heed to his cries, nor rendered any assistance. The Wolf, having no cause of fear, at his leisure lacerated or destroyed the whole flock. 3. Read the following excerpt. Then, identify and explain the type of figurative language being used out of the following: an allusion, hyperbole, simile or a metaphor. “There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet. Its hazards are hostile to us all. Its conquest deserves the best of all mankind, and its opportunity for peaceful cooperation many never come again. But why, some say, the moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas?” 4. Review the different author’s techniques from Unit 2 (especially lesson 2.05). Then, please read the following excerpt and explain the type of technique being used in the following example (make sure your response is at 1-2 sentences long): “Wolf! Wolf!” cried the boy, but nobody came. As the beast descended upon the herd, the boy watched in fear. His precious sheep were masticated by the fearsome wolf, but none of the villagers would come. “If only I hadn’t cried wolf before,” thought the boy, “I could have saved my precious flock!”
Hello! Unfortunately this is a little bit of a long answer, maybe you can break it up into parts? I'll do a few, but I'm short on time, so... 2. A "theme" is a recurring (repeating) idea that is the foundation throughout a scenario, story or situation. In this excerpt, you see that the boy plays a prank on his neighbors because he is bored, lying to them that a wolf has come. After a while of lying, it's likely that they don't believe him anymore, so that when the wolf actually comes, of course they wouldn't come. The point of this is to dissuade (advise against) lying, because then nobody will believe you when you're telling the truth. ...so what is your theme? 3. I can't explain to you which one it is but here are some definitions for the terms mentioned:
- allusion - hinting at, or referencing, a topic by the way you phrase things (i.e. if you say something is green, it probably means either something related to nature, or related to the meaning of 'go,' like a green light)
- hyperbole - an exaggeration meant to embellish descriptions (aka when you're very hungry, you say 'I'm starving!' but obviously aren't actually starving)
- simile - a comparison using 'like' or 'as'
- metaphor - a comparison that does NOT use 'like' or 'as' (literally the only difference from a simile)
