Anatomy Tutorial: Components of the Integumentary System

\({\bf{Components~of~the~Skin:}}\) three components, from outermost to innermost: > epidermis > dermis (contains connective tissues) > hypodermis (technically not part of the skin but considered here for convenience) \({\bf{Layers~of~the~Epidermis:}}\) five layers, from outermost to innermost > stratum corneum: flat, dead, keratin, protects against environment > stratum lucidum: clear, flat, eleidin > stratum granulosum: flat, keratohyalin > stratum spinosum: produces keratin, largest out of the five layers > stratum basale: single layer, divides to create more layers mnemonic device: come (corneum), let's (lucidum), get (granulosom), sun (spinosum), burned (basale). can't take credit for this one, was in the book. |dw:1533150274133:dw|
\({\bf{Components~of~the~Dermis:}}\) - sebaceous glands: glands of oil connected to hair follicles. produces sebum. (if you've ever seen those black dots on you're nose they're probably not blackheads, they're sebaceous filaments and they're good for your skin, if not a bit unsightly) - sweat glands: carry sweat through ducts and out of pores for excretion and thermoregulation - Pacinian corpuscule: sends information about vibrations/touch to brain - Meissner's corpuscules: sends information about lighter sensrations \({\bf{Structure~of~Hair:}}\) - shaft: the part that extends above the skin surface - root: the part that anchors inside the skin - root sheath: surrounds the root - hair bulb: round structure at the bottom of the root - papilla: supplies blood/connective tissues to hair - erector pilus: muscle that changes the position of hair |dw:1533151235392:dw| \({\bf{Components~of~the~Hypodermis:}}\) > arteries (carries blood to skin) > vein (carries blood away from skin) > fat tissue for insulation
Anyway, that's the end of my tutorial, I hope it was a helpful resource. Source material is the Princeton Review Anatomy Workbook, 4th ed.
