Ok, cool, so let's take the pentomino, and represent the numbers that go into it. Let's call the center of the pentomino "x". The top square, then would be (x-10), because it is exactly 1 row above 'x', which is always 10 less than 'x'. For the same reason, the lower square is (x+10), and the left and right squares are (x-1) and (x+1), respectively. Cool, so, we're working with the sum of all the numbers in the pentomino, which we can write as (x + (x+10) + (x-10) + (x+1) + (x-1) Try simplifying this expression. Do you notice anything special about the result?
