In a Gallup poll, 2000 U.S. adults were selected at random and asked to agree or disagree with the following statement: Job opportunities for women are not equal to those for men. The results of the survey showed that 1190 people agreed with the statement and 700 women agreed with the statement. If half the people surveyed were women, how many men agreed with the statement? Draw a Venn Diagram to help you solve this problem as needed.

Shadow:

Hello @chris58cren Do you know how to create a Venn diagram?

chris58cren:

Not on this site. I can otherwise draw one; this is one of the practice problems we are doing for set theory.

Shadow:

Ah okay, so you already have one drawn out?

chris58cren:

Yep

Shadow:

and you are having difficulty determining the number?

chris58cren:

I'm having trouble labeling the diagram then appropriately placing the given information in order to determine the number

Shadow:

Well we can exclude most information and get down to the most important. They want us to determine "how many men agreed with the statement?" Create a general body labeled as the amount that agreed with the statement, which as we know, is 1190. Then subsection of women who agreed, then another for men who agreed. We know that 700 women agreed, so we need only subtract 700 from 1190 to find the number for our second subsection, which is the number of men that agreed.

Shadow:

Does that make sense @chris58cren

chris58cren:

So it is 490? I just wanted to try and draw the diagram to be sure. I didn't know for sure if I had enough info to assume that there are 1190 people total who agreed and 700 of those were women therefore the rest must be men.

Shadow:

I see what you're getting at. This information allows us to assume the women/men demographic. If half the people surveyed were women, how many men agreed with the statement? Also, they are using sex as a category, thus men/women. If it were gender identity then we would need to be open to many other types of individuals in this total 1190 population. But the terminology isn't consistent (it would need to be male/female) for us to take on that prospect.

chris58cren:

Thank you for helpin
