Lets say we have a study in which we kick students in the nuts and then see how they do on a test. Kicking the students in the nuts is the independent variable, since it is the factor in which the researchers observe the effects of and alter (across test and control groups). So in other words, if something is being given to a test group and not to a control group, it's probably the independent variable. Next up, we have the test results. This is the dependent variable since it is the effects of the independent variable. Lastly, we have the confounding variable. In our little example, this would be Mr. M disowning one of the test subjects before he took the test. The test subject then does poorly on the test. Did the test subject do poorly (dependent variable) because of getting kicked in the nuts (independent variable) or because Mr. M disowned him? That is a confounding variable. Experimenter effects is just a quick easy one. So there are two groups: the test and control group. The test group gets the independent variable (getting kicked in the nuts) and the control group doesn't. The experimenter thinks that those that get kicked in the nuts do better on the test. But this is before they have concluded their study. And he lets this influence him when it comes to grading the tests, giving them more points.
