zarkam21:

Need a little help. A pain-relieving pill has a mass of 0.005 g. Express the pill’s mass in grams using scientific notation or in milligrams. Express your answer in scientific notation to one significant figure or use a prefix on the unit.

zarkam21:

@Vocaloid

zarkam21:

Can someone teach me the basics of scientific notation here?

Vocaloid:

alright we can express very large or very small numbers by ___ * 10^____ where the first blank contains a number from 1 to 9.9999etc. and the second blank contains a whole number exponent. positive exponents indicate numbers greater than 0 and negative exponents indicate numbers less than 0

Vocaloid:

the exponent tells you how far left or right to move the decimal point ex: 1.2 * 10^3 tells you to take 1.2, move the decimal point three places to the right to get 1200 1.2 * 10^(-3) tells you to take 1.2 and move the decimal point three places to the left to get 0.0012

Vocaloid:

of course, your problem gives you the number and asks for scientific notation the base of 0.005 is 5 (since 5 is between 1 and 9.99999etc.) since 0.005 is less than 1 we want a negative exponent so we just need to count how many decimal points to move from 5 to 0.005 and put that into the blank 5 * 10^(-____)

Vocaloid:

made a small typo in the first paragraph "where the first blank contains a number from 1 to 9.9999etc. and the second blank contains a whole number exponent. positive exponents indicate numbers greater than 0 and negative exponents indicate numbers less than 0" should be greater than 1, less than 1, not 0

zarkam21:

3?

zarkam21:

sorry was writing notes

zarkam21:

sorry was writing notes

Vocaloid:

good so 0.005 g = 5 * 10^(-3) g

Vocaloid:

the question also states you can use a prefix to express g in mg g to mg is just a multiplication by 1000 so 0.005g = 0.005 * 1000 mg as an alternative solution

zarkam21:

so 5g as an answer

Vocaloid:

be careful, if you use the alternative route it would be 5 mg

zarkam21:

Just screwing up on the unit

zarkam21:

A car traveling with constant speed travels 150 km in 7200 s. What is the speed of the car

zarkam21:

I got 48 because its distance/time

Vocaloid:

i think you divided time/distance distance / time would be 150/7200 km/s

zarkam21:

but do I put the decimal or just the fraction

Vocaloid:

they would probably want you to simplify so 150/7200 = 0.021 km/s
