Skeleton2000:

A scientist is creating a new synthetic material. The material’s density is 6.1 g/cm3. Which sentences describe how the scientist can lower the material’s density? a.) The scientist can decrease the mass while keeping the volume constant. b.) The scientist can increase the mass while keeping the volume constant. c.)The scientist can decrease the volume while keeping the mass constant. d.) The scientist can increase the volume while keeping the mass constant.

SmokeyBrown:

Remember that density is mass/volume. So, the larger the mass, the larger the density. Likewise, the larger the volume, the lower the density. With this in mind, what are two ways to decrease the density?

Skeleton2000:

i'm not that smart so i don't know sry, i'm dumb

SmokeyBrown:

Ok, one way you can think of density is as a measure of how tightly packed a material is. So, if you have a stress ball, and you squeeze it together, you make the stress ball more dense. You're not changing the mass of the ball, but you are decreasing its volume. It takes up less space, so it's denser. Another example would be packing a snowball. As you add more snow to the ball, you also squeeze the ball together. Say you keep the ball about the same size while you're doing this. In that case, you'd be making the ball denser by increasing its mass while keeping the volume the same.

Skeleton2000:

so, which one is it?

Skeleton2000:

nvm i got it

SmokeyBrown:

Awesome
