Any ideas for creating my own paper and pencil game?

That ultimately depends on two things --

  1. (1) what genre you wish to use
  2. (2) who your audience is intended to be.
But I like math/logic games, if you wanted a reference point.

Pencil and paper game, huh? Like tic-tac-toe? I know if you have a sheet of grid paper, you can play a turn-based game of snake with a friend. But, if you want to make something original, I guess you'd have to figure out what kind of game you want it to be. Should it be point-based, like scrabble? Or maybe more about board control, like connect-four or go. And then, you'd want to think in more detail about the objective of the game, what each player needs to do to win. Then you can build up rules from that foundation to make the game balanced and interesting
