Do you have any examples youโd like to go through ? Basicallly you start by finding the longest carbon chain (which may not always be obvious), change -ane to -ene or -yne if thereโs any double or triple bonds Then make a list of all the side chains and their locations, and add them to the beginning of the compound name in alphabetical order
Of course, thatโs for straight chain alk*nes, things get a little different when you start adding things like -OH or -COOH, etc. or naming aromatics
I remember that we said in class to attempt to pin the lowest numbering to substituent-linked carbons
