If the pre-image of a polygon can be mapped onto the image of the polygon through a rigid transformation or a series of rigid transformations, then the polygons are congruent. Polygons are congruent to each other if one polygon can be mapped onto another polygon through a series of rigid motions. Rigid motions are transformations that do not change the size or shape of the figure. Rigid motions include translations, rotations, and reflections. Dilations are not rigid motions because they affect the size of the figure.

A polygon is a closed figure made up of line segments. For two polygons to be congruent, they must have the same size and shape but not necessarily the same orientation. If the two polygons are congruent, it means that their corresponding side lengths and angle measures are equal & and each pair of corresponding angles have the same degree measure. Isosceles triangles have two congruent sides and two congruent angles. The congruent angles are opposite the congruent sides. When two polygons are congruent, the corresponding sides and angles are congruent. You can find lengths of unknown sides of a polygon when you know certain side lengths and angle measures in the two polygons.
