What can be correctly concluded based on this excerpt from Leo Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich? At the law courts too, Ivan Ilyich noticed, or thought he noticed, a strange attitude towards himself. It sometimes seemed to him that people were watching him inquisitively as a man whose place might soon be vacant. Then again, his friends would suddenly begin to chaff him in a friendly way about his low spirits, as if the awful, horrible, and unheard-of thing that was going on within him, incessantly gnawing at him and irresistibly drawing him away, was a very agreeable subject for jests. Schwartz in particular irritated him by his jocularity, vivacity, and savoir-faire, which reminded him of what he himself had been ten years ago. A. Ivan misses his former self before the fear of his impending death forced him to mend his ways. B. Ivan looks forward to spending quality time with his friends, but not his family. C. Ivan likes to share his innermost thoughts and feelings with his friends. D. Ivan was pompous and fake until his impending death made him face the reality of his life. E. Ivan found his friends to be caring and supportive during his illness after his bad fall.

I would say D would be the best choice for this one. B can't be correct, since the way Ivan feels his friends don't take his plight seriously, and he's bothered by their lighthearted attitudes. C is not right, since Ivan does not express his frustration to his friends or family, even though we the readers know his inner thoughts. E is not right for much the same reason. If anything, Ivan's friends seem rather insensitive to his situation. A and D are rather similar, in that they both describe a change in Ivan from his past self to his present self. I think D is a better choice, since Ivan compares his past self to Schwartz, who is described with qualities of "jocularity, vivacity, and savoir-faire," which all relate to a sort of superficial charm. The passage never hints that Ivan misses his former self, nor does he have to mend his ways in any specific manner.
