for lessons 1-2 of Integrated Chinese please refer to my other study guide https://questioncove.com/study#/updates/5b9b05c9738a4c1ec4d5d800
\({\bf{Exam~Overview:}}\) exam 2 will be more difficult than exam 1. You should be able to go from English to Chinese, producing both the correct character and the pinyin from memory, including the correct tone mark and placement. \({\bf{Lesson~3~Dialogue~1:}}\) - Days of the Week: 星期___ (xīngqī) where the number of the day goes in the blank. In Chinese, Monday is day 1, Tuesday is day 2, etc. just remember that Sunday is not day 7; rather it is 星期天 (xīngqī, note that both have tone 1 on the i). 天 is tiān (sky) which has tone 1, try to think of the horizon to remember this. - Months of the Year: ___ 月 (yuè) where the number of the month goes in the blank. January is 1, February is 2, etc. - Saying the date: ___ 月 ____ 号 (hào). Note that yuè and hào both have tone 4. - Saying the year: 年 (nián). just list the digits in order, then add 年. - Saying the time: ____点 (diǎn) ____分 (fēn) to remember the third tone on diǎn try to remember two hands on a clock, and fen as a single tone, as the minute hand of the clock. - Ages/birthdays: > 你今年多大? (how old are you this year?) nǐ jīn nián duō dà? you can omit 今年 to be less formal because if you ask somebody's age it's implied to be their current age > 我__岁 (I am ___ years old) wǒ ____ suì. try to remember tone 4 by imagining somebody insisting that they're old enough to do something > 生日 shēngrì (birthday) try to remember tone 4 by thinking of the sun, just as the rays shine downward, the tone mark goes downward too.
continued: couple more things to say about time 晚上 wǎnshang (tones 30) evening. we haven't learned "morning" yet but if you're curious it's 早上 (zǎo shang) which also has the same tone combination 半 bàn (tone 4) 30 minutes past the hour (in general, means "half") 刻 kè (tone 4) 15 minutes past the hour so instead of saying 30 分 (fēn) or 15 you can use these words Expressing Opinions: 太___了(tài le) too _____ (insert a status verb into the blank) ex: 太小了 too small 喜欢 (xǐ huan) to like General Expressions: 谢谢 (xiè xie) thank you 再见 (zài jiàn) goodbye, or literally, see you again 怎么样 (zěn me yàng) how about it? Conjunctions: 还是 (hái shì) and 可是 (kě shì) but
\({\bf{Lesson~3~Dialogue~2:}}\) 现在 xiànzài (now). can remember tone 4 by thinking of something urgent, or something that needs to be done "now" 明天 míng tiān (tomorrow) 很 hěn (very) 忙 máng (busy) 为什么 wèi shén me? (why?) 因为 yīn wèi (because...) Talking about Acquaintances/Friends 朋友 péngyou (friend) 同学 tóngxué (classmate), same tone, 22. this is probably easy for me to remember since my classmates are all about my age, 22. 认识 rènshi (40) if you're having trouble remembering it, try to focus on the radicals on the right hand side, 人只 and noticing that they both have the same radical on the LHS
\({\bf{Lesson~4~Dialogue~1:}}\) *this will be the main focus of exam 2, but you still need to know everything from lessons 1-3.* 周末 (zhōu mò) weekend Hobbies: a lot of tone 4 characters, if that makes it easier to remember. 大球 dǎ qiú (this is a dumb way to remember, but try to imagine a ball bouncing before being thrown into a hoop, it will follow the pattern indicated by the tone marks) 看 kàn (to look/to watch/to read, depending on what comes after it). to remember tone 4, try to imagine somebody urging you to look at something. 看书 kàn shū (to read) to remember tone 1, try to imagine someone sitting calmly and reading 看电视 kàn diàn shì (to watch a TV) to remember tone 4, try to imagine an action show with lots of punches/shouting/etc. 看电影 kàn diàn yǐng (to watch a movie) 唱歌 chàng gē (ge still has tone 1 just like 哥哥. chàng is basically the radical kou with two ri radicals, try to imagine someone singing very loudly) 跳舞 tiàowǔ (to dance. tiào means jump. wǔ is the exact same pronunciation as 五 so perhaps try imagining five dancers to remember that it's the same tone) 听音乐 (tīng yīn yuè) if you can remember that ting and yin have the same tone 1, while yuè is the same tone as "moon" or "month".
Talking about duration/frequency: 常常 (cháng cháng) 有的时候 yǒu de shí hou (sometimes) Misc: 去 qù (to go) 外国 wài guó (any foreign country, so 外国电影 = any foreign film) 请客 qìng kè (to invite someone out) 昨天 zuótián (yesterday) 所以 suǒyǐ ("so")
Lesson 4 Dialogue 2: 好久不见 hǎo jiǔ bú jiàn (long time no see). try to remember the tones in pairs. 3324. remember that bu would normally take a tone 4 but ends up being tone 2 because it's followed by a tone 4. 错 cuò. (wrong) easy to remember the tone on this, just imagine somebody shouting "wrong" at you. 想 xiǎng (want to/would like to). so the radicals for this are for "picture" and "heart". a picture that your heart makes = your desire 觉得 juéde (to think) 意思 yìsi (meaning) 只 zhǐ (only) 睡觉 shuì jiào (to sleep. it's hard to connect the idea of sleeping with tone 4's but maybe imagine somebody ordering you to go to sleep) 算了 suàn le (forget it). easy to remember this one, just imagine somebody getting frustrated, saying "forget it" with some force. 找别人 (zhǎo bié rén) to look for another person. if you can link bie ren together you can remember they both have the same tone.
