Well, just throwing some suggestions out there, hoping one of them helps. Was it important that the narrator be far enough away from the corpses not to recognize them in detail? Did the narrator need to make an escape, which would require them to be far away from the graves and the (I assume) living corpses that appeared? Maybe the positioning was done with dramatic tension in mind, so that the narrator could slowly approach the graves, while playing on the audience's apprehension? Just spitballing here. Also, going off on a limb, is this maybe an Edgar Allen Poe story?
