Imagine the Confederacy as 'southern small states' and the Union as 'northern large and powerful government' We know during the Civil war the south wanted slavery while the north did not. The Union wanted to set tariffs but the south didn't like it since it kinda limits their trading ability. The Confederacy wanted more power for the states while the Union wanted more power for the federal government.
