PLS HELP!!! Which of the following is true for the relation f(x) = x2 + 8? Only the inverse is a function. Neither the equation nor its inverse is a function. Both the equation and its inverse are functions. Only the equation is a function.

eviant:

@Vocaloid

Vocaloid:

is the 2 supposed to be an exponent? anyways, just sketch the graph and see if it passes the horizontal and vertical line tests

eviant:

yes the 2 is an exponent what are the horizontal and vertical line tests?

Vocaloid:

graph the function 1. vertical line test: if you can draw a vertical line anywhere so that it crosses the function more than once, the original relation is not a function 2. horizontal line test: if you can draw a horizontal line anywhere so that it crosses the function more than once, the inverse is not a function

eviant:

Vocaloid:

well it's x^2 + 8 not just x^2 but it doesn't really matter in this case so taking a look at your function, can you draw any sort of vertical line that would cross the function more than once?

eviant:

@kittybasil thanks

eviant:

@Vocaloid I don't think so, not a straight line

kittybasil:

❓❔

Vocaloid:

good so the original relation is a function what about a horizontal line?

eviant:

we can draw a horizontal line though, right?

Vocaloid:

yes so the inverse is not a function therefore "Only the equation is a function." ---> your sol'n

kittybasil:

Here's your function, sorry about that
