bill533:

The main character in each story in this unit deals with a difficult conflict. For each of the 4 stories, describe the resolution of each main conflict by filling out the chart below. Answer: Definitions of different types of conflict: -Man vs Nature: An external struggle between man and a natural force (example: weather, animals, etc . . .) -Man vs Man: An external conflict between two characters (example: a fight between friends, a fight between enemies, etc . . .) -Man vs Society: An external conflict where one character must take on societal norms (example: pressure to conform or not) -Man vs Self: An internal struggle within one character (example: deciding between good and evil, struggling with self-doubt, etc . . .)

bill533:

My teacher says for number 3 3 - In the conflict column, you need to write "man vs. society" or man vs. man or man vs. nature or man vs. self. Put the descriptions of the conflict in the 4th column and be sure to explain how the quote/conflict shows the type of conflict you put in the 2nd column. P.S. Your Walter Mitty quote is not from the story we read. And Silky Bob was not framed.

SmokeyBrown:

Oh ok, what are the stories?

bill533:

hold on one second

bill533:

please

bill533:

the first story

bill533:

then all i'll give the rest

SmokeyBrown:

Ok

Quote from the story that shows the conflict you chose. Be sure to include the page #. Once sentence description of how the conflict plays out in the story

SmokeyBrown:

Oh wow, interesting story. So, this one is about a woman, Josephine, who has been told that her husband has died in an accident. As she processes the news, she finds herself thinking that maybe her husband dying will give her more freedom in life, and she comes to be glad for the news. Towards the end of the story, Josephine is so shocked to find out that her husband was alive the whole time that she dies of a heart attack. I think this one would be man vs. self, since Josephine struggles with her own feelings as the main conflict of the story

bill533:

Once sentence description of how the conflict plays out in the story IN “The Story of an Hour” Kate Chopin

SmokeyBrown:

Well, mainly Josephine struggles with her feelings about her husband's death and eventually collapses when the reality of her husband's survival doesn't match up with her hopeful anticipation that he is dead.

bill533:

Quote from the story that shows the conflict you chose. Be sure to include the page #.

SmokeyBrown:

I think the conflict becomes clear on page 3 of the story. Almost any quote from that page would do the trick, I think

bill533:

which quote do you prefer

SmokeyBrown:

I think the third paragraph on the page works well, and most of the fourth paragraph is good too, but that would be a little long

bill533:

should i put the quote ?

SmokeyBrown:

Yeah, I suppose so

bill533:

but i can't see in page 3

bill533:

is it when she says free free free ?

SmokeyBrown:

Yeah, the conflict is pretty clear there, and there's a lot of buildup to that moment too, before she accepts her feelings of freedom

bill533:

it's free free free ?

bill533:

or go away, i am not making myself ill

SmokeyBrown:

Oh, I think when you're asked for quotations, it doesn't necessarily mean something that a character said. You're just meant to quote the text of the story. So, if you quoted all of paragraph 3 or the whole sentence containing the "free free free" quotation, I think that' work well

bill533:

ohh i see

SmokeyBrown:

I think this one would be man vs. man, probably. Bob and Jimmy have conflicting interests, with Bob wanting to meet his old friend and Jimmy wanting to uphold the law, although this isn't revealed until the very end of the story. I think the content of Jimmy's letter at the end shows this pretty well

bill533:

Quote from the story that shows the conflict you chose. Be sure to include the page #.

SmokeyBrown:

Oh yeah, like before, it's the last page of the story, but I'm not sure what number that is

bill533:

PROBABLY PAGE 8

SmokeyBrown:

Yeah that sounds alright

bill533:

or 7

bill533:

Once sentence description of how the conflict plays out in the story

SmokeyBrown:

Maybe we'd want to describe how Bob's goal of meeting up with his old friend conflicts with his friend's responsibility to make sure he is arrested as a wanted criminal

SmokeyBrown:

I think this story has man vs. self as the conflict. Walter Mitty struggles in his day-to-day life because he constantly gets lost in daydreams, where he lives a more exciting life.

bill533:

Quote from the story that shows the conflict you chose. Be sure to include the page #.

SmokeyBrown:

There are a lot of examples of Walter's daydreams. The story opens with one, and I think there are about three more throughout the story. Each time, his daydream is interrupted by reality, and Walter realizes he's actually in some sort of dangerous or embarrassing position. You can really take your pick about which example you want to use.

SmokeyBrown:

Oh well this one is definitely man vs. society. Tessie Hutchinson is reluctant to participate in the lottery, but she is obliged to by tradition, which ultimately kills her

bill533:

Quote from the story that shows the conflict you chose. Be sure to include the page #.

SmokeyBrown:

I think on page 21, when the villagers realize that the Hutchinsons have the marked paper is when Tessie really begins to show opposition to the lottery, saying repeatedly that the decision wasn't fair.

bill533:

Once sentence description of how the conflict plays out in the story

SmokeyBrown:

I guess, Tessie's attempts to get out of participating in the lottery conflict with the villagers' insistence that they go through with it

bill533:

thank you for number 3 i appreciate now it's for number 4 i'll post a new question

SmokeyBrown:

Ok, I think I'm gonna head out now. Good luck with the rest of your assignment!
