My first thought was that it was the backbone of their economy, as they focused on plantations of goods such as cotton and tobacco.

Yeah I mean they are sort of intertwined, but this one is raw knowledge. I was thinking of political reasons, such as the Framers and Congress being lax on the South because they wanted them back.
