Shadow:

The Government's Response to Illegal Immigration This is the title of my final essay for my English class, below is the current introduction. Looking for thoughts on the grammar, structure, as well as thoughts on the topic. Low effort/trolls will be sent packing.

Shadow:

Since its inception, the American experiment has thrived by allowing immigrants to enter a country defined by its freedoms that allow for a better life — a reason why many choose the United States (U.S.) as their permanent home. Yet, whilst the U.S. government has established means of legal immigration, rampant illegal immigration has become a growing issue which has pushed the two dominant political parties of America: the Republicans and the Democrats, to make it central to their policy platforms. In 2016, then presidential nominee, Donald J. Trump, made illegal immigration a pivotal element to his speeches across the country. He became well known for his solution of building a wall on the Mexico–U.S. border. Whilst it garnered much attention and was perceived as a radical response to the issue of illegal immigration, he answered the fears of the American people when it came to knowing that hundreds of thousands of people were entering the country without its consent. With now President Donald J. Trump’s push for ending birthright citizenship — the country is once again ignited in a heated discourse on illegal immigration and what the U.S. ought to do about it. This research paper will explore illegal immigration as it relates to the political parties and their platforms, as well as the practicality and repercussions of their current policies. Footnote for birthright citizenship: " Birthright citizenship, also called jus soli (law of the land) means “whoever is born in the U.S. and is subject to its jurisdiction is automatically granted U.S. citizenship” (USLegal.com). lowkey:

Are you actually saying your essay is this short? I would give more on introduction

AP:

This year, the Trump administration limited the staff members that handle immigration interviews overseas and added to the list of qualifications that would qualify a potential immigrant as "high-risk", making the screening process significantly more difficult. It's estimated that only 20,000 refugess will enter the U.S. this year as a result of this, making it the lowest turnout since the creation of the Refugee Act of 1980. ( **Only about 2,100 Muslim immigrants have entered the U.S. as of June, 2018, in contrast to the approximate 39,000 total that entered in the year 2016.) The $25 billion wall will only be effective on about half of the amount of illegal immigrants crossing the Mexican border, according to statisticians. More recently though, this is small, but in the six days leading up to the Midterm elections, the caravan was mentioned an average of 20 times per episode on the Trump administration's "favorite" news medium and only mentioned once post-elections, which is indicative that it was only used as a tool/political stunt to drive voters to the Republicans' side, despite the opposition of the majority of Republicans from California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas who are concerned about finding replacement workers in agriculture. Moreover, it is estimated to cost about $60 billion to deport 750,000 people who contribute approximately $28 billion to the U.S. economy each year. Generally though, it seems the policies the Trump adminstration hopes to carry out is motivated by nationalism, which can only result in major conflict in such a culturally and ethnically diverse nation such as the U.S..

mhchen:

I'm sorry AP but I don't think that's what Shadow is going for. The intro looks nice. AP copied bits and pieces from articles he read recently. If you do a google search, the top-search results on immigration all have a left-bias. From your intro, I'm guessing the body is going to be about 1. Why illegal immigration is a problem. Or what problems do illegal immigration cause. 2. How does the 2 political parties view it. (and your opinion on their stance) as well as Trump's solutions: -Border Wall -Birthright Citizenship and how it'll affect it. How are you going to research this anyways? Even newspapers claiming to be independent are supporting the democratic party.

Marziman:

Shadow, what type of help are you looking for? @AP Breathe my dear, breathe. It's okay. I'm here now.

AP:

I consider myself fairly informed on this topic and usually, I will read articles from both liberal and conservative news mediums. - Shadow asked us for our thoughts on these political issues and I simply shared what I had in mind - it was a request to be subjective and I saw it as an opportunity to bring my own opinion.

Marziman:

@mhchen

Marziman:

It doesn't matter if news sources support one party or another, this is why you seek studies/statistics. Generally, the news site you've visited that cites certain stats will say "source, UNDP gun violence/death stat report 2015" or something under the statistic.

Marziman:

As far as the immigrant influx, whether you're scared by the number of people entering or not, that's for you to decide.

Marziman:

I can't stress enough that bias doesn't matter so long as there is equal representation, essays are usually persuasive pieces to begin with. It's not blocks of text that throw words out there. I'm not going to provide any details on the matter as Shadow has his position and @AP has a contrasting viewpoint. I believe he has all the information he could need.

Shadow:

Lots to read, give me a sec guys.

Shadow:

I agree that bias doesn't matter that much because I can always go to Fox for a viewpoint that will contrast strongly with CNN or MSNBC. @mhchen has correctly identified where I am going with this. Although I don't mention examples explicitly in the introduction paragraph, I do highlight that I play on exploring the proposed solutions by both parties. DACA is a popular example of legislation by Democrats for illegal immigrants. So as for exploring Democratic policy on this issue, that will be on, as well as the view of offering a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants (statistics pointing to a strict enforcement of the law ->deporting all illegal immigrants -> huge economic impact and cost). For Republicans, obviously the wall and ending birthright citizenship. Any other policies that you guys have heard of I also welcome. This essay is due in a couple of weeks and I haven't done a ton of research, which is why I am asking.

Shadow:

Also, this may seem like I am taking on a broad topic, but it is a research paper that is supposed to be 8-10 pages, and my professor has expressed leniency for going over if the content is good. I don't plan on making it argumentative, or persuasive towards another side. More like pros and cons of each and letting the reader decide. Although I admit to having a conservative stance on the issue, I don't plan on letting that influence the direction I have for the essay.

Shadow:

So you can already see some of the body paragraphs forming. The first going over why illegal immigration is important to the political parties (what each party believes). Then just taking each policy and analyzing it. If that helps (:

gabethebabe:

mention how trump is removing jus soli

gabethebabe:

with just an executive order

gabethebabe:

also mention how gridlock in congress is preventing them from figuring out how to shorten the length of time needed to immigrate legally and that caravan i forgot its name

gabethebabe:

those migrants from central america

Shadow:

Can you expand on the gridlock, or do you have an article?

Shadow:

Are you referring to the process that takes place after they declare asylum?

gabethebabe:

im saying there is (or was dependent on the numbers after this midterm) bipartisan issues on how to come to a conclusion oh how to shorten the immigration process and also what to do about that caravan. I dont have an article on me but id just research the topics

Shadow:

Ah okay, just wanted to see if you had something specific in mind. Ty though.
