Nevey:

Kyra observed that 85% of the students at a library liked reading mystery stories. If 30 students at the library did not like reading mystery stories, the number of students at the library who liked mystery stories was _____.

Elsa213:

`It is said that 85% of the students liked reading mystery stories. This means the remaining 15% don't like to read these stories. If there are 30 students belonging to the second category, then the number of students who liked reading mystery stories is (30/0.15)*0.85 equal to 170 students out of 200 students.`

Nevey:

yea but theres no way there is 170 students or whatever u just said. its probs more around 35 or 40

Nevey:

30 students = 85%

Elsa213:

Google said so. Do wateva yew must.

Nevey:

@Kamauri

Shadow:

85% like mystery stories, 30 don't like mystery stories, thus 30 is 15% of the total number of students. \[0.15x = 30\] 15% of x is 30 \[x = 200\] \[200 \times 0.85 = 170\] 85% of 200 = ....

Nevey:

there is no 200. where are u guys getting that number?

Shadow:

Would you agree that 10 is 10% of 100?

Nevey:

yes

Nevey:

but in this case, its 30 = 85%

Shadow:

10% converted to a decimal is 0.10 Multiply 100 by 0.10 and you get 10

Shadow:

That is how you find the number of which a percentage represents.

Shadow:

Oh I see the issue

Shadow:

"85% of the students at a library liked reading mystery stories." LIKE "30 students at the library did not like reading mystery stories" DO NOT LIKE "number of students at the library who liked mystery stories"

Shadow:

Equating 85% to 30 is not correct.

Nevey:

0.0 i read it wrong

Nevey:

i thought it was saying that 85% = 30 and u had to find how much 15% would be 0.0

Shadow:

Well since 85% like reading stories and 30 people don't, we know that 30 is 15% of total # of people.

Nevey:

right.

Shadow:

All good?

Nevey:

yea, but arent i supposed to find out how many ppl the 85% would be since 30 =15%?

Zepdrix:

Yes, figure it out? :D

Zepdrix:

15% + 15% + 15% + 15% + 15% + 15% + 15% = 105% 30 + 30 + 30 + 30 + 30 + 30 + 30 = 210 You can approximate this way if you're not fully convinced. We know that 7 of these 15%'s is near 100%. So 7 of these 30's will be 210. So your end results should be somewhere around 210. Confused by Elsa's steps? :d

Shadow:

@Zepdrix You almost gave me a heart attack when I scanned this and saw 210 lol

Zepdrix:

x'D

Shadow:

@Nevey Do you get the concept?

Nevey:

i already answered lol. i believe i put 170 for it.
