She's traveling at some rate toward the mountain, let's call it x.
|dw:1544755265393:dw|
On the way home, it only takes her 6 hours since she's traveling (x+16) miles/hr. 16 mi/hr faster than her rate on the way toward the mountain.
Recall that distance = rate * time
So, distanceHouseToMountain = 8 * x
distanceMountainToHouse = 6 * (x+16)
But notice that those distances should be identical, yes? :)
yes
So, \(\large\rm 8x = 6(x+16)\)
so this is the equation I have to solve
in order to get the answer to the question
So, x=6(x+2) ?
No. That is a clever thing to attempt though. But if you want to divide 8 out of 6(x+16) You have to either take 8 out of 6, or out of each the x and 16. So inside the brackets would become x/8 + 2 So let's not divide by 8 as a first step :)
so it would be 48 miles?
8x = 6x + 92 2x = 92 x = 48 mmm ya that looks right :D yay good job
Thank you so much
