Shadow:

The independent variable is the variable that is changed or controlled, and brings about the dependent variable. The dependent variable is what is measured. For example, observing if food positively affects a lone child's mood. Food would be the independent variable, since we would have a test group that gets the food and a control group that does not. The child's mood would be the dependent variable since it would be what is observed, after the IV has been introduced.

Shadow:

Temperature could be another example of an independent variable, as it can be controlled through AC or a heater. If it is held constant, it becomes a control variable (no change in temperature).
