Beowulf bravely decides to fight Grendel without any weapons. Grendel comes through the door that leads to the mead-hall. He starts to tear open and eat people, drinking their blood. Beowulf attacks to defend the people of the kingdom. When Grendel realizes that Beowulf is going to win he contemplates on retreating. He then decides not to because he never has before. Soon Beowulf rips off Grendel's arm and mortally wounding Grendel enough to make him retreat. Defeated by Beowulf, Grendel returns to his liar and dies alone.
