Millions of immigrants arrived in the United States during the late-1800s and early-1900s. They hoped to make better lives for themselves and their families. Many immigrants, however, faced several challenges as they adjusted to life in the United States. OBJECTIVES Describe the challenges immigrants faced in society at the turn of the twentieth century. Instructions Write a short, fictional story about immigrants to the United States during the late-1800s and early-1900s. The story's plot and characters should accurately depict the experiences and challenges of immigrants at the turn of the twentieth century. Your story should be 600 words in length and include the following information: a description of each character, including his or her name, age, and homeland; a summary of the push-pull factors that influenced each character to come to the United States; a description of where each character settled in the United States; a description of the living conditions where each character settled; a description of a particular challenge faced by each character, such as finding a job, feeling cultural shock, assimilating into American culture, experiencing discrimination from native-born Americans, or dealing with political machines.

``` Why: Due to starvation, many immigrants left their homelands. Food contamination occurred which led most Chinese to flee from their homeland. What: Once arrived, the Chinese began to work as manual laborers. Although they were paid less than others, they did most of the work by laying the tracks from the west to east on the railroad. Soon, they faced prejudice and were able to get safer and better jobs. Discrimination: The Chinese were discriminated and Congress passed an act of Chinese Exclusion in 1882. The Chinese Exclusion blocked the Chinese from gaining US citizenship and banned Chinese immigration for ten years, however, it wasn’t repealed until 1943. Arrival: In contrast to the Europeans, the Chinese arrived in Angel Island, San Francisco. Due to the Chinese Exclusion Act, their parents had to be US citizens. Many were held in the facility for months before rejected or accepted. ```
Between the years 1865 up to 1900s, the life of African Americans weren’t as easy as nowadays. There have been many changes since that time period such as social, economic, and political. They were limited in freedom and couldn’t do much about it. In the year 1865 (end of the civil war), the Black Code was approved. The Black Code was a right to block African Americans from freedom and rights. Due to this law, it was considered illegal for African Americans to vote, carry weapons, serve on juries, marry white citizens, and travel with no permit. However, once the 13th amendment passed, the Black Code could no longer be considered a law and was put to an end as well as slavery. In 1866, an organization arose by the name of “Ku Klux Klan”. The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was a secret organization to bring back power to the whites in the South by persecuting the African Americans. Refraining African Americans to vote, the organization would burning schools, destroying homes, intimidating voters, and public hanging. In late 1870, the population of the Ku Klux Klan decreased. In 1898, the “Grandfather Clause” was created in multiple Southern states. The Grandfather Clause was a law that was soon established to allow poor whites to vote, however, blocked African Americans from voting. If your grandfather or father did not vote before the year 1870, you had no right to vote.
