I am announcing the first prompt for the QC Writing Contest.

"In your opinion, what is the role of government? Do you think the current U.S. federal government is fulfilling this role?"

Due date: 2/1/2019, Friday

You have a little less than two weeks. Here are a couple of thoughts that can help you generate some ideas.

Our government consists of the federal (national), state, and local levels. Each has the judicial, legislative, and executive branch. The first, legislative (Congress), writes the laws. The second, executive (U.S. President), enforces the laws. The third, judicial (Supreme Court), interprets the laws.

This essay will focus on the federal (national) government. It can sound difficult, but what we are essentially asking is “What do you think the government is supposed to do and are they doing it?” You can agree or disagree, praise or critique. Look at current events, such as the shutdown (DACA vs the Wall), trade war (U.S. vs China), and much more. Anything within the past couple years is fair game.

All participants will be entered into a raffle for a $5 (1-month) QC subscription. As voiced on the earlier post, everyone who enters will have an equal chance of winning the prize. However, the stronger your argument is, the better your chances will be, in the form of extra credit points.

Additionally, if enough people participate, I will include the best writer category. The best writer as found through the grading will be awarded a $5 (1-month) QC subscription. In that, there will be two winners (as the random winner cannot also be the best writer). So be sure to spread the news (:

Writing Requirements:
-Double Spaced
-12 pt font (any font)
-2 pages (+1 for overflow)
As long as you make it at least ⅔ the way down the second page. That’s a ‘page.’ The +1 is just in case you wish to make a more lengthier argument. Anything past three pages will disqualify you. You will not automatically earn ‘extra’ points by taking advantage of the +1. However if you make a strong argument in that +1, well (:
-Follow the prompt

-Keep in accordance with QC rules. Nothing inappropriate, such material will not be tolerated and immediately disqualify you from this and future participation in the contest.
-Do not plagiarize.
This should go without saying but this will immediately disqualify you from this event and all future events.

MLA Format: Follow it if you know it. Makes our lives easier. If you don’t, you can try and learn it. But if not, don’t sweat it. You will not be penalized for being out of format and can only accrue extra credit from doing so.

Be sure to title it as [QC Essay Contest (January) - QC Username]. Be sure to fill in QC Username with your username else I’ll have to figure out who emailed me. Word Doc/PDF is fine. If you use Google Docs, you can convert those and email it over [File->Download as,...].
