a metaphor, broadly speaking, is a comparison w/o using the words like or as. a simple way to construct a metaphor is simply to say "[A] is (B)" where A and B are nouns that are unlike but share some characteristic the author wants to emphasize so in the case of a final exam, you can say "A final exam is (something tedious or hard)" like a mountain climb or perhaps (something confusing) like a puzzle it's really up to you where you go with this
