the variable that you're controlling is the gender of the parent who is occupied with their career, so that's your independent variable
if you're looking for the affect on a child's social and emotional development, this needs to be the dependent variable, not "time spent together"

the discussion question isn't bad but I'd just broaden it a bit, more along the lines of "what sorts of emotional and social issues might arise in a child with separated parents" or something

you could also discuss the pros and cons of having two working parents vs. one working + one stay-at-home
