imagine the area under the curve as a riemann sum, where the area is decomposed into a series of rectangles |dw:1551889494631:dw| each rectangle area can be calculated by evaluating the height of the rectangle and multiplying it by the width of the rectangle. the height of the rectangle, as you can see is the value of the function at that point. for the portions of the curve that go under the x-axis, the height of the rectangle will be negative and the width will be positive, meaning that the area of the rectangle comes up to to be a negative number. summing a bunch of negative numbers gives a negative result for the integral.
