Shadow:

You are given all of the existing and future titles of an existing video game franchise free of charge. The catch is, you are only allowed to play that particular franchise. What franchise would it be and why?

JustSaiyan:

Pokemon because it will never die. Nintendo does not know when to quit. A keyring isn't a pokemon. ;c It's just not right. Also I'd get to know all the secrets to every game and own the rights to one of the largest game franchises in history, meaning I'll also be disgustingly rich.

Shadow:

@JustSaiyan I meant to play not own noob. But yeah, for me it would be Pokemon as well. There is just something about that game. Perhaps it's the adventure. Or the way it captures anyone's imagination. I can't quite put my finger on it, but do you have any favorite titles?

JustSaiyan:

Pokemon Green, Pokemon Yellow, and Pokemon Crystal. The older generations were better than the newer ones. They were actually monsters and not........objects with faces. They pretty much turned the franchise into a distorted version of the Animated Alice in Wonderland.

JustSaiyan:

As for what draws me to it, I suppose it's the lore inside. The glitch manifestations. The storyline and how it plays into the lore. Of course none of it mattered to me when I played them for the first time. I just wanted to have the strongest pokemon. I guess the nostalgia would be another reason.

Shadow:

mhm, nostalgia is definitely a component I find too. My first Pokemon title was Pokemon Silver for Gameboy. It was my first console and first game ever actually. Although the first real one I truly played through was Pokemon Diamond and Platinum. Subsequently I enjoyed Heartgold, but I think the dropoff started in Unova although I think I enjoyed Pokemon Y the most. I suspect this is since I played it after a long hiatus from Pokemon but I ignored all the fancy stuff they added and stuck to the lore, as you put it. Have you played any recently? Found them redeemable?

JustSaiyan:

Pokemon Omega Ruby. It was only good because it was a remaster of Ruby for the Gameboy. I only liked them up until HeartGold and SoulSilver. The rest were just.......it's like they stopped trying as much. Some of the pokemon were cool and unique, like Zebstrika, even though it was just a zebra, but some were just random objects. Not to mention they continue to make it harder and harder to complete the national pokedex legitimately, with now over 900 or so pokemon existing.

Shadow:

Yeah I'm not a fan of adding in a ton of new Pokemon. I think they handled Alola well with the introduction of regional variants, as this makes a lot more sense. New starters makes sense too (branding), but honestly, Up to Sinnoh I could name every Pokemon. Starting in Unova, things just got weird.

Shadow:

I actually started Omega Ruby but didn't finish it. I think the overpowered nature of Primal Groudon got to me. I think they're going for something that people truly don't want. Like the Mega Evolutions and Z-Moves. I guess it spices up competitive play but that's not the meat of their base, you know?

Shadow:

I feel like they could have done fine with having a new story to venture through each time, with different concepts implemented such as the trials in Alola.

JustSaiyan:

Yeah Primal Groundon was unnaturally overpowered even compared to Primal Kyogre or Mega Raquaza. It doesn't just weaken water based moves, it completely nulls them, making it's primary type weakness completely ineffective.

JustSaiyan:

And then completely scrubbed out Pokemon Emerald, making it a small event after the main story-line.

Shadow:

mhm, I'm hoping with the newly announced Sword and Shield they do the franchise some good. I currently have Omega Ruby and Sun 2 unfinished, so I might give those a try again whilst I wait. But I'd honestly buy X just to play through Kalos again.

JustSaiyan:

I have Pokemon Pearl, Diamond and SoulSilver. I used to have all of them (except pokemon green, because that's Japan only, we got pokemon blue in the US) up to HG/SS until we were robbed on Easter Sunday about 8 or 9 years ago. I had to replace most of my games and my DS and TV.....s.

JustSaiyan:

I wonder what Franchise Ultri will pick. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Ultrilliam:

Oh that's a tough one... I would choose the neptunia franchise but the sad truth is that franchise won't last forever, no mater how much I want it to. It has decent re-playability, but could quickly get boring. I might have to go with the Ratchet And Clank franchise, so long as sony exists there will be at least one game on each console. It has excellent replayability, at one point I used to repeatedly beat the ratchet and clank games all day and night. A sad truth to that is that the days of consoles is coming to a close, and will within the next couple of generations probably fade out. Or become prebuilt PCs at a point. I would say the mario franchise but it's very easy to get burned out of that, although it will likely continue for a long time. Thinking past 10 years it could quickly become extinct no matter what you choose, honestly.

JustSaiyan:

Pokemon is about 23 years old. Give or take. It does not show any signs of ending, at least until Satoshi Tajiri dies and they either find a replacement or simply end it.

Ultrilliam:

The stars that burn brightest, fade the soonest

Shadow:

True, but for stars that's billions of years still.

JustSaiyan:

And they have the possibility of exploding and vaporizing everything that might see them fade. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Shadow:

As long as you define good franchises to be of the pedigree near or approaching Pokemon, then that metaphor works.

Shadow:

Since most video games aren't stars as they will eventually fade due to how they are structured, or their play ability as you mentioned.

JustSaiyan:

I feel like we are overlooking another large game franchise but I can't seem to figure out which it is.

Shadow:

To be honest, I haven't played that many video games. But I'd have to say Mario and that group.

Shadow:

I feel like you could define Sonic as a star, but it doesn't feel quite as massive as Mario and Pokemon.

JustSaiyan:

That moment when you immediately switch your choice from pokemon to Gotcha Force from Capcom

JustSaiyan:

And the other franchise I was thinking of was Grand Theft Auto. It's been around just as long as Pokemon, and it has the ability to keep releasing more as time passes because it's a reality simulator. Whenever real-life advancements are made they can apply it to the game, such as flying cars, new weapons, nuclear fallout o-o

Shadow:

Never played it, but I'll look it up as soon as I get out of this mess of schoolwork lol.

ThisGirlPretty:

Space Invaders, I'm good at that game e.e kinda it was always one of my favorites

lowkey:

This is by far the nerdiest post you have ever made.

Eiwoh2:

I'd have to agree with everyone with Pokemon, though tbh, i'd have to also say Smash Bros. Obviously. x'D
