How to make an effective egg drop material using limited resources

lowkey:

@shadow @vocaloid

lowkey:

Only the following materials may be used as part of your design: a. Toothpicks (unlimited) b. Popsicle sticks (unlimited) c. Glue (unlimited) d. Tape (Up to 2 feet in length) e. String (Up to 2 feet in length) f. Copy Paper (one standard sheet) g. Straws (6 max) h. Rubber bands (6 max)

lowkey:

Any Ideas?

Vocaloid:

ehh I'd have to think about this one, I've personally never done this experiment before ideally you'd want something that isn't rigid, and can fold/bend to absorb some of the impact and reduce the final momentum. if you can somehow turn the paper into a parachute that might help too

lowkey:

I've actually thought of that, but I'm reading the rules right now to see if parachutes are allowed lol

Shadow:

Parachutes are the best but usually aren't allowed.

Shadow:

I ran this and honestly the majority of designs that survived were just a bunch of tissue in a box lol.

lowkey:

Nope no regulations against this

lowkey:

How could I use paper as a parachute?

Shadow:

For other designs that are more structured, you need to be accurate or forces will hit the egg.

Shadow:

You're just creating air resistance to oppose gravity. Max surface area and low mass.

Vocaloid:

> *notices unlimited toothpicks and popsicle sticks*

lowkey:

I was thinking about making a small pointy popsicle stick container to put the egg in and to add the parachute to add an extra leeway

lowkey:

400 grams max, btw

Shadow:

mhm

lowkey:

Should I make something where the egg is placed in the middle of a big popsicle or toothpick area and make the surface area as big as possible?

Vocaloid:

maybe but you'd also need to make sure it doesn't bounce around or break free

lowkey:

1 attachment
lowkey:

Kinda like this but much more bigger in size, no pointy things cause then it'll bounce

Shadow:

Yeah this one works by directing force away from the egg. I tried this design out, and strapping the straws is a bit harder than it looks.

Shadow:

Since there are few restrictions, be sure to abuse that tape (:

lowkey:

LOL I was just thinking of abusing the glue since it's unlimited

Vocaloid:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnufiaTc_iU idea for the paper parachute i'd also use toothpicks to reinforce the structure to make sure the paper actually stays open otherwise it's useless

lowkey:

Ooo thank you <3

mhchen:

I can tell you what didn't work LEL When I did this project in middleschool I used a brown bag with paper towels and cotton on the inside to cushion the egg. Then I used toothpicks and stuck those on the bottom to act like a spacecraft landing-gear. I was so confident in my design that I spent the rest of my class time drawing a huge happy face on the bag. I watched my happy-faced Mr. EggBag fall from a 2-story building in front of my entire 7th grade class. Apparently the toothpicks at the bottom were pushed further into the bag after hitting the ground. and they stabbed right into my egg. So yeah don't do what I did. My friends were hollering at my design

Shadow:

lol
