Some murderers aren't conscious that they are murdering people. What state of mind would they be in?

Saw a very scary show where this guy killed three people then he realized what he was doing and just cried his heart out
Where was his mind when he was killing the people? What happened to him?

Not sure if this answers your question, but there's something called homicidal somnambulism, where a person murders someone while sleepwalking (wakefulness during NREM stage). Check the famous Regina v. Parks where a man drives to his mother-in-law and kills her while sleepwalking.

@AGENTJSVSL Gave a good answer. Since they aren't conscious that they are killing someone, it is most likely a delusion (from schizophrenia for example) or as Agent pointed out, them being in some altered state of consciousness such as sleep, or even hypnosis.
