basically there are three types of conditions: isotonic, hypertonic, hypotonic

hypertonic - the outside of the cell has more solute, causing water to flow out of the cell to re-establish equilibrium

hypotonic - the inside of the cell has more solute, causing water to flow into the cell to re-establish equilibrium

isotonic - the inside and outside of cell have roughly equal solute concentrations so there is no net movement of water
