bluehussle39:

7e-4=31

TheSmartOne:

Is e a variable? What I mean is, are you solving for e? Otherwise, then the e is being used for scientific notation and then there is no question because 7e-4 \(\neq\) 31

misty34:

If its an equation add 4 to 31 first

bluehussle39:

35

misty34:

Then you divide it by 7

bluehussle39:

okay

bluehussle39:

i got 5

TheSmartOne:

The reason why we do these operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) is to cancel out and eventually to just get that letter all by itself so we have 7e - 4 = 31 we have a 4 that we are subtracting on the left side How do we get rid of it? By doing the OPPOSITE on BOTH sides? What's the opposite of subtraction? It's addition. So we add 4 on both sides 7e - 4 + 4 = 31 + 4 the -4 + 4 on the left side cancel out and we're left with 7e = 31 + 4 we can do 31 + 4 and that's 35 so now we have 7e = 35 Are you following so far?

TheSmartOne:

It's important you understand how to do this question because as you go on to the next grades, this will become really basic and there will be much harder math to do

bluehussle39:

so its 35 right

bluehussle39:

yeah i know that

misty34:

The way I learned it is the way Thesmartone explained it.. but to solve for e divide 35 and 7

misty34:

5 is right
